[mixvisor id=”56394705e65543f37118bdab” ]Josh Ward ‘s traditional style and attention-grabbing voice has captivated us here at Texas Music Pickers for several years now. His ability to turn heads and pack a dance floor is as good as anybody’s, and while he’s been doing it for over a decade, we think the best is still yet to come! Ward just released his new single “Whiskey & Whitley” at the end of last month, and is set to release his next album, “Holding Me Together” at the end of this month (10.30.15)! With all of that excitement going on, it was an easy decision to feature this Texas native, as this month’s Spotlight Artist! We had the opportunity to chat with Ward earlier this week, and here’s what the honky-tonker had to say:
Texas Music Pickers: Tell us a little bit about the Josh Ward Band.
Josh Ward: We’re a high energy honky-tonk band based out of the Montgomery area.
TMP: Who would you describe as musical influences?
JW: George Jones, Merle Haggard, George Strait, and Keith Whitley
TMP: How would you describe your style of music?
JW: We like to keep our sound traditional for country music fans, but also put a little more modern spin on a few favorite covers that we have worked into our live show. We want to keep the dance floor packed with good music!
TMP: You’ve had a string of very successful singles, what does it feel like to continually see your name at the top of the charts?
JW : It’s a great feeling! Feels like 13 years of touring all over Texas and beyond is starting to pay off, as radio spins our singles and we reach more and more people. It’s always an honor to see your name alongside artists that you’ve looked up to and toured with.
TMP: We were big fans of your previous single, “Highway”. Can you tell us about the current single “Whiskey & Whitley”?
JW: Whiskey & Whitley is probably one of my favorite cuts on the new album. Being a longtime fan of that song and actually getting to sit down and talk with Buddy Owens and Kevin Denney who co-wrote it years and years ago with Mark Narmore and, learning the story behind the song, I just knew I had to include it on the new album. I wanted to give the die-hard country fans something to grab a hold of and have some faith that country music is still alive.
TMP: Tell us about the upcoming album, “Holding Me Together”.
JW: I’m really excited about the new album “Holding Me Together”. I believe it’s one of the best projects I’ve put out so far, I’m really proud of this one. We went back to Rosewood Studios in Tyler with 10 new songs, some that I co-wrote and also cuts from my buddies Cody Johnson, Matt Caldwell, Dusty Neuman, Buddy Owens, and Kevin Denney, plus some all-time favorites that I’ve always wanted to cut! Its country and I wanted to give the fans something to really get excited about. The last track, “Together” is also how we got the title of the album. I think once the fans hear that song, they will know why I picked those lyrics for the Album Title. This last 18 months has been the most trying time in my life and I wanted to give something back to the fans who were “Holding Me Together” though it all. It’s a very special project that I put my all into, and I’m very proud of it!
TMP: What do you guys have lined up for the album release tour?
JW: As of right now the cd release tour dates are being announced soon. Our first release party will actually be the week before it drops, Oct 23rd at Buffalo Creek in Bellville, just stay tuned to the Facebook page and website as we will be releasing those dates and venues in the next week or so!
TMP: So far, what has been the highlight of your career?
JW: Highlight of my career… there’s been so many… shows in France, capacity crowd at the HLSR Hideout — last week I got to hang out in New Mexico for a few days with Dean Dillon and Kevin Denney amongst other artists, which was an amazing experience, spiritual almost! I’ve been so fortunate to be able to travel and share my brand of music and meet a lot of great people along the way!
TMP: What is your favorite thing to eat while out on the road?
JW: My favorite place to eat on the road – probably Cracker Barrel. I love some home cooked food! Oh and you gotta have some beaver nuggets from Buc-ee’s
TMP: What is on the horizon for the Josh Ward Band?
JW: We’re hoping with the release of the new album we will be able to gain new fans, sell out some shows, and just keep filling the calendar with more tour dates outside Texas; hopefully reaching some new states we’ve not played before.
TMP: Is there anything else you’d like your fans to know?
JW: I just want everyone to know that we really feel like we have the greatest fans, they are special to us and we wouldn’t have a job without their support. They spend their hard earned money to come see us play music and to get the opportunity to meet our fans, and hear stories of how our music has helped them thru a difficult time, or gave them something to smile and dance to, is the greatest feeling. We love our fans and appreciate all the support over the years, but most definitely over the last year!

A Houston native, Josh’s earliest musical exposure was to old gospel hymns he sang in church. As a teenager riding in the high school Rodeo Circuit he discovered the likes of Willie, Waylon, Merle, Jones and Strait. Those musical legends inspired him to pick up a guitar and start singing in the parking lots of his rodeo events. Encouraged by his reception at the rodeos, he put his first band together and began paying his dues at the local honky-tonks in 2003. Through tenacity and hard work Josh has grown into one of the most respected and appreciated musicians in the state. His honest and emotive delivery of every song compels audiences to feel his lyrics with him as he takes them on his musical journey. Fellow songwriter Mike Ethan Messick once said of Josh, “Josh Ward sings like Mike Tyson hits. Hard.”
Josh Ward is also an avid outdoorsman. When not on stage he spends many hours on the water or in the woods. He won the Oakley Big Bass Championship in March of 2011, and has placed first in many of the weekly bass tournaments on Lake Conroe. Josh is currently sponsored by W4 Outdoors, Falcon Rods, and Costa Del Mar Sunglasses.
Josh Ward released his 3rd album “Promises” in June 2012. The first single “Get Away” reached #18 on the Texas Regional Radio Chart – almost unheard of for a debut artist. Josh’s second single “Rainout Hangout” quickly moved up the Texas and Regional Radio charts – reaching Top 5 status. The third single “Sent Me You”, a ballad written by Scott Brown (Scooter Brown Band), gave Ward his very first Number 1 on both the Texas Regional Radio Report & The Texas Music Chart in April 2013. He followed with another #1 on his 4th single, “Promises” in Sept 2013. Josh’s most recent single, “Hard Whiskey” was released in November 2013 and reached #1 on the Texas Regional Radio Report and #3 on the Texas Music
