Kody West released his first full-length album, “Green”, today, and it is everything we wanted and more! Produced by Ben Hussey and Josh Serrato, the vibrant blend of country, rock, and soul found amongst the ten tracks, provide an alluring mixture of gritty tones, colorful songwriting, and captivating music!
West’s 2016 EP, “Higher Ground”, certainly gave us reason to be excited for this year’s full-length project, but the record completely surpassed our expectations! The growth and maturity from his previous project in the songwriting and overall sound, is as about as impressive as it gets. With a lot of buzz already surrounding the singer/songwriter this record is certainly poised to take him to the next level!
Penning 9 of the 10 tracks, the edgy vibe West emits in his writing, seems to come natural and effortlessly, providing authenticity to his charismatic style. I continually found myself drawn in to every detail of the production. Whether he’s reflecting on a troublesome relationship (Shine Out, For the Last Time, Green) Love (Love Me Too), his demons and vices (In the Morning, Ledges, Ogygia) dangerous circumstances (Million Miles) or the divine (The Prayer, Melody), West paints an often complex, but always complete, picture. The attention to details in each story and his use of literary devices is beyond impressive.
Our *PICKS* of the album are “Ledges” and “For the Last Time”.
Singing of the baggage and chaos we create through our own actions, even when it’s our desire to a better person, West makes “Ledges” (written by Noah Gundersen) completely his own with his powerful delivery. The powerful musical build at the end really brings it home, and we predict that this will be one of the biggest songs of the album!
We also love the analogous breakup rant of “Free for the Last Time”. The imagery and metaphors in the writing really make the track stand out and provide the listener with a captivating take on moving on from a failed relationship! If you’re looking for proof of how good of songwriter West is, look no further! With the relatable message, solid instrumentation, and well-crafted lyricss, this is one DAMN good song!
This kid definitely has a bright future in this scene, so hop on the bandwagon now and grab yourself a copy of the album! Thank us later!
