We are excited to announce Texas Music Picker’s TOP PICK contest, where the grand prize will be $500 cash, a recorded single from Hilltrax Studios, a songwriting session with award winning singer/songwriter Tony Ramey (George Strait, Alabama, Trisha Yearwood, John Michael Montgomery, & more) AND award winning singer/songwriter, Drew Womack who’s written seven top 20 singles since 1996 including Kenny Chesney’s first number one smash “She’s Got It All”!
Preliminary rounds will take place on 9/19 and the final rounds will take place on 9/25; both at the Grand Stafford Theater in Downtown Bryan, TX. Contestants will be graded on three categories: songwriting, vocal ability, and showmanship/performance! So if you think you’ve got what it takes keep reading!
Contestants will be asked to submit a YouTube video of them performing a live version of an original song. The song cannot be longer than 4 minutes and the artist must play and sing in the video. The contestant must currently reside or be from Texas and our contest will be geared towards country, Americana, roots, folk, or any other genre you would see on the Texas music charts. Along with the YouTube Video, contestants will be asked to submit their names, and their contact information..
We will then select 20 contestants for our contest. The submission deadline is September 6th at Midnight and contestants will be notified no later than September 12th of their acceptance in to the contest. (Unfortunately, we will not be able to contact submissions who we’re not accepted.) Once the contestant is accepted into the preliminary round, they will be expected to submit a $25 entry fee via Paypal. Failure to submit entry fee will result in forfeiture of their spot, and another contest will be placed in their spot.
Day of Show:
On September 19th, all 20 contestants will be asked to arrive by 2PM to check-in and sound check. Contestants will be placed in to 2 groups of 10: Group A & Group B. Group A will perform from 5PM-7PM and Group B will perform at 8PM-10PM.
On September 25th. All final contestants will be asked to arrive by 5:30 PM to check-in and sound check. The show will begin at 7:30. Tony Ramey will give an acoustic performance immediately following the show.
Contestants must play a different song each round! The song must be no longer than 4 minutes, it must be a solo performance, and the contestant must perform all music needed. Contestants are responsible for providing their own instruments.
The accepted 20 contestants will be split up in to 2 groups of 10: Group A & Group B. Each group will go through the same process and scoring.
Preliminary Rounds (9/19)
Each contestant will preform an original song. The top 3 scoring contestants will be automatically put through to final rounds on 9/25. Immediately after, the remaining 7 contestants will preform a cover song of their choosing. The top 2 scoring contestants will be put through to the final rounds on 9/25.
The 5 advancing contestants from Group A and Group B will merge in to one final group for round 3.
Final Rounds (9/25)
Each contestant will preform an original song. The top 3 scoring contestants, and the contestant who has the highest audience score of the remaining contestants, will advance. Each contestant will perform an original song and a cover song of their choosing. The contestants will then be ranked 1st, 2nd, and 3rd.
3 judges will grade contestants on a scale from 1-10 in 3 categories: Songwriting, Vocal Ability, and Showmanship/Performance. The maximum a contestant can score from the judges is a 90 (3 judges X 30 points). The audience will also be given the chance to vote each round. The contestant that receives the most amount of audience votes will receive 10 additional points, the contestants receiving the 2nd most audience votes, will receive 9 points, and so on….The amount of audience votes, will also act as the tie-breaker between any two artists with the same score.
3 judges will grade contestants on a scale from 1-10 in 2 categories: Voice, and Performance. The maximum a contestant can score from the judges is a 60 (3 judges X 20 points). The audience will also be given the chance to vote. The contestant that receives the most amount of audience votes will receive 10 additional points, the contestants receiving the 2nd most audience votes, will receive 9 points, and so on….The amount of audience votes, will also act as the tie-breaker between any two artists with the same score.
