Venue Spotlight: A glimpse into the {soul} of The Grand Stafford Theater

The Grand Stafford Theater is a venue filled with personality nestled in downtown Bryan, Texas. Between the great talent coming into this venue all the time and the free shows on the First Friday of every month – The Texas Music Pickers love The Grand Stafford Theater! I got the chance to sit down with Jennifer King at the Stafford and hear a little more about this incredible venue.

Emily: Take me through the history of the Grand Stafford Theater.

Jennifer: The Grand Stafford Theater opened in the fall of 2012 after some remodeling it is a 140 year old building that was originally a movie theater. Our parent company, Advent GX, whose mission and passion is community development in support of historic preservation loved the idea of bringing live music and other community oriented programs to the area.  The Stafford is an example of that mission. We also host a monthly foreign film series, a series called Software Developers Cartel (a meeting of tech types free and open to the public) and Pecha Kucha.  The venue is also available for private parties; we’ve hosted anniversary parties, high school graduation parties, rehearsal dinners and reunions.

Emily: What was the remodeling process like?

Jennifer: We moved the entry door, and the location of the bar. This had been a music venue previously,   we simple improved some of the facilities, and added a cooler to offer draft beer on tap.  All of this while keeping the historic feel with the original brick walls and timbers.   We have an excellent sound and lighting system, probably the only thing missing is a large monitor in the upper level that would give our guests in our premiere lounge a better view of the stage and the performance during events.

Emily: What was the inspiration behind making the Stafford a live music venue?gst1

Jennifer: It seemed to lend itself to being a live music venue. The acoustics here are really great, the location, the ambience and the history.   It seemed to be a natural fit. We’d love everybody to come out and experience all the Grand Stafford has to offer.   It is a truly a lovely building –the architecture, the history,  even if you don’t think you’re a live music fan, once you come here, you become a live music fan.
