“3” is a declaration of a firm state of mind: happiness and revelry. “These songs came out of the good times and the bad times, but the recurring theme of this thing is me finding my happy area,” Canada said. “My band’s where it needs to be. I don’t need to fight it.”
The album is a mixture of several styles of music with heavy inspirations by outlaw country icons of the 70’s and rock bands of the 90’s. Tracks like “Lost Rabbit,” “Daughter of the Devil,” and “Sam Hain” remind us of the smell of cigarettes on an old pool table in a dive bar. They provide the album the nostalgic feel of gritty good times.
Among the heavy electric guitar lies something from left field: synth and techno. Canada included songs “Paranoid” and “Better” which have a 70’s synth pop feel meets a “Ringling Road” by William Clark Green kind of vibe. It’s something old mixed with something great, giving us a new and unexpected sound.
Possibly the standout songs of “3,” tracks “Lipstick,” “One of These Days,” “Satellites and Meteors,” and “1800 Miles” are songs of reflection and love. “I’m a fan of love,” Canada said. “I love my wife who I’ve been with for 20 years. I love my kids. I love my friends.”
These tracks are embedded with strong guitar solos, soft acoustics, light duet vocals, and long chord strokes. The combination of heavy bass and simple percussion really makes us feel at ease with our lives– a reflection Canada says this album is all about.
There’s a little bit for every Red Dirt, 70’s outlaw, 90’s rock lover in “3.” This album reminds us to take a step back and count our blessings.
