Dolly Shine puts best foot forward in “Walkabout”

Dolly Shine has built a solid reputation for their edgy mixture of country, Americana, and Roots.  We first fell in love with their unique combination of rugged vocals, honest songwriting, and smooth music on their 2013 album “Room to Breath” and have been eagerly anticipating another full-length record ever since.

Well the wait is finally over, as their 9-track album, “Walkabout”, is set to drop next Friday (6/17) and is sure to quench their fan’s desire for new tunes!  We were fortunate enough to get our hands on the record a few weeks ago and it’s been playing through our office speakers, non-stop, ever since.

We definitely dig the collection of songs that can be described as “individual tales of a drifter’s diary”.  The songs are filled with observations and stories of interesting characters reflective of life’s happenstances – – some are troubled, some are angry, some choose to flee their circumstances, and some choose to stay and endure.  The unapologetic, punch-to-the-gut storytelling is honest, authentic, and most noticeably, able to highlight how differently people react in the face of adversity.DS Press Photo 1

While the fiddle licks certainly drive the record’s music, McGinn’s straight-forward delivery of each account cut through to the listener’s heart and mind making them feel the emotion of each story.

Whether it’s  the tale of troubled souls meeting their end (Blackbird, Snakeskin Boots), embattled relationships (Closing Time, Twist the Knife, Anywhere Close to Fine), or escaping one’s circumstances by traveling through the heartland (Rattlesnake, Hitchhikin’), don’t expect anything in the way of euphemisms, but rather a direct version of the truth, whether you like it or not.

The no-holds-barred lyrics, rich music, and captivating stories make “Walkabout” the best project from the Stephenville 5-piece to-date!  We suggest you get yourself a copy next Friday, but in the meantime, take a listen to our favorite two tracks from the record:  Come out Swingin’ and Old Flame, below!
