Every once in a while, a voice comes along and completely captures us…
We’ve been hearing rumblings about Waco, Texas singer/songwriter Jackie Darlene for a while now, so when we got word that she was about to release the lead single from her first studio produced album, we knew we had to get our hands on it!
“Why Do I Cry” hit our inbox a few days ago, and we’ve been anxiously awaiting our opportunity to showcase it. Produced by Josh Serrato & Ben Hussey, Darlene penned the tune right after she ended an unhealthy relationship. “It was not going anywhere and was not good for me mentally or emotionally. The kind of relationship where you know the person is not good for you, but you keep running back to them anyways. We’ve all had one those. It can become a toxic cycle for oneself” Darlene told us.
Shortly after writing it as a therapeutic way to be honest with herself about the situation, she decided to end it completely. Referencing the old adage, ‘fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me’, Darlene faces the reality of her relationship with lines like ‘I’ve been down this road before, and I keep coming back for more. The blame is on me, ’cause by now I should know..that a love like this can’t grow”
We love the way she works through her troublesome relationship through her lyrics, taking the listener along the emotional journey. The smooth, bluesy vocals cut right through to the listener’s heart and her powerful delivery certainly makes you take notice. The track strikes a serene balance of country and Americana, making it easy on the ears and a perfect fit for today’s musically rich scene.
The track is the first glimpse fans get in to her upcoming 6 track EP, “Diamond in the Rough”; set for release October 21st! Stay tuned to her social media for updates on the project, but in the mean time, click the play button below, and let your local radio stations know you want to hear “Why do I Cry”!
